Allergy friendly home can be a stylish home

As I was walking from my office to Hotel Le Germain on Mansfield street in Montreal to meet with Colin and Justin, I kept saying to myself, ”I hope I will not be sneezing 13 times as I sometimes do in winter, this could be very embarrassing even though Colin and Justin were about to share with me some of their allergy proof tips for your home Christmas decorations, I don’t think a sneezing introduction would be de mise .”

Colin and Justin in montreal good

Colin and Justin’s hallmark as Interior Designers is to help their clients make choices for a beautiful, happy and healthy home, in their perpetual quest for this special task, they have realized that many people have indoor allergies, and they found out from Claritin that nearly two thirds of Canadians with or living with someone with indoor allergies have tried to protect their home against indoor allergy triggers.

So here are Colin and Justin’s tips for Christmas decorations.

Dust your ornaments: Christmas ornaments have been sitting in a box

all year, and may also be coated in dust or mold. If possible, unwrap them

outside to avoid spreading dust inside your home. Wipe them off with a soft

cloth before hanging. At the end of the season, wrap your ornaments in new

paper, rather than re-using old, dusty paper.

Clean your wreaths: Artificial wreaths can be vacuumed or dusted with a soft cloth. Use a vacuum with a Hepa filter, like the Dyson Animal, to remove dust, and keep it in the cleaner, rather than in the air.

Colin also told me he vacuumed their friends dog with this Hepa filter and the dog absolutely loves it, and it gets rid of all the extra floating hair.

Avoid scented candles: Scented candles can cause stuffy noses and

irritated lungs. If you crave a little atmosphere with your holiday meals, try

unscented beeswax  and soy wax candles.

SONY DSC

You can find these beeswax and Soy wax candles made in Scotland at Homesense, Winners & Marshalls, by the way Colin and Justin are from beautiful Scotland.

You can also  visit Christmas fairs and buy from small independent makers who can tell you all about manufacture and components.

Christmas is Not To Be Sniffed At…Quote C&J

Shake it or fake it – seems to be the way for allergy sufferers to enjoy a

Christmas tree this year. Follow Colin and Justin’s  tips for reducing indoor allergens and

enjoy an allergy-friendly holiday season, where the only tears in your eyes will be from the lovely family times ahead!

Tips for Real Christmas Trees

Real trees can a haven for mold, dust, and pollen – add in allergies to tree

sap – and to some particular genus of tree – and you might be itching to find

an alternative. If you long for a real tree then:

Choose an allergy-friendly tree: avoid pine trees as the pollen can be a

major allergy trigger for some people. Fir, spruce, or cypress may be a better bet, with the Leyland Cypress – a sterile hybrid tree, the best choice as it does not produce pollen.

Give it a shake: some tree farms have a mechanical tree-shaker that will

serve to remove dead needles as well as some of the dust and mold.

Wash your tree: before you bring the tree into the house, spray it off

with water and allow to dry overnight in the garage. This will remove

some of the loose mold and pollen that is on the tree. Using a vegetable

wash like Nature Clean veggie soak http://www.naturecleanliving.com/

fruit_veggie_wash_concentrate will remove more mold and pollen than water

alone, and will also help to remove any pesticides that have been sprayed on

the tree – another major irritant.

Pop it outside: If you long for a real Christmas tree, then why not take it

outside and dress a tree in front of your main window or out in the porch for

visitors to see as they arrive. That way you can enjoy it from afar without

problems.

Choose an eco-friendly alternative tree: some are modern, some natural

but all are ideal alternatives to those who want to make a holiday statement

without creating health issues. There is a card board trees like: http://boutique.cascades.com/ca/en/catalog/christmas-trees/

Colin and Justin in Montreal 066

For a modern look you can use a cake holder and fill it up with Christmas balls and Christmas decorations and top it up with a lovely candle.

Colin and Justin in Montreal 074

For a smaller tree, you can get one of these washed newspaper trees, they have an old feeling about them but are quite modern (I like to think of myself this way). The small driftwood tree would look terrific in your country home.

The good news is that an allergy-friendly home can still be a stylish home,  Create a new tradition, a tradition of your own that will make your family and friends happy and healthy.

I find rugs are the creators of harmony, unity and warmth in a room, these are all very human qualities, hmm I suppose it is easier to talk this way  about rugs in our lives than men in our lives.

The Simple abundance of Richard Gere’s home

Richard Gere’s home is on sale for 65 millions dollars, I thought you might like a home tour of his incredibly beautiful estate. I think that Richard Gere is a lucky Buddhist to live in such a superb home.

 [Sothebys via Curbed Hamptons]

richard leadimagereader-4

Richard Gere’s home in the Hamptons is called Strongheart Manor Estate. The house is a classical red brick building dating from 1902, it has an elegant quiet look about it.

imagereader-1

As you may know, Richard Gere is a Buddhist, his home is located on the water, water is important in Buddhism.  ”Water symbolises purity, clarity and calmness, and reminds us to cleanse our minds and attain the state of purity” http://www.buddhanet.net/e-learning/buddhism/meditate/water.htm

imagereader-3

A true feeling of clarity and calmness, so Mr. Gere,s home totally reflects  his Buddhism aspirations.

imagereader-6

Outdoor living area.

imagereader-7

A zen sunroom with contemporary furniture has a calming effect. Each room has ceiling fans, a reminder of the past, when air conditioning was non existant.

imagereader-9

I find that the kitchen is a mixture of Edwardian and country contemporary styles with a bit of Victorian (The ceiling shape and lights have this je ne sais quoi vintage 1902.) Queen Victoria died in January 1901 so her son Edward had a bit of time to establish his own style.

imagereader-10

I could move in and live in the stairwell, it might not be so comfortable but it is certainly beautiful to look at.

imagereader-11

Relaxing simplicity in abundance.

imagereader-13

The music room is a happy mixture of different styles furniture. They are two pink pillows on the sofa, apparently in the Buddhist religion, the pink Lotus is associated with the Buddha himself, thus the importance of the color pink. (Or was it only the decorator?)

Mixing your old with new in your home

Personally I love mixing old with new in the decoration of homes, and I am not talking about your husband and your lover. A few weeks ago, I just discovered the Master Mixer of old and new Lorenzo Castillo,  famous Spanish Interior Designer, antique dealer and a true inspiration.

Here’s how it happened, I was invited at a presentation of his first fabric collection at Kravet in Montreal, and I totally fell in love with him…and his fabrics.

What I find fascinating about the Lorenzo Castillo collection, is that he chooses a number of colors and texture and mixes them in a multitude of patterns and creates total harmony. In this picture, the contemporary geometric and the traditional flowers.

I don’t have to tell you that I am very excited by this new fabric collection, I wanted to share it with you. I find it inspiring, it might not be your decorative style, but it shows us how we can without fear mix old and new, traditional flowers and stripes and geometric contemporary patterns. For more info you can go to http://www.kravet.com/

May the force be with you.
